The Social Sciences Department offers a variety of anthropology, economics history and political science courses that will satisfy the first two years of study at many four-year institutions. No matter what your focus area, faculty and advisors work with you to create a transfer plan to the school of your choice.

Department Highlights

Social Science-Related Careers

Students taking courses in the Social Sciences Department go on to careers in fields such as education, museums, politics, law, research, finance and more.

Political Science Internships

Students enrolled in the Selected Studies in Political Science (POLS 258) may work as interns for the local office of the district’s member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Several political science students also have worked locally on campaigns for local, state and national candidates.

 Did you know …

This department is part of the effort to promote Asian studies at Black Hawk College. We have several alumni of the East-West Center’s Asian Studies Development Program which promotes better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia and the Pacific through cooperative study, research and dialogue.

Non-Majors Welcome!

We offer interesting elective courses in that can fulfill degree requirements as well as campus-wide events.

Scholarship Opportunities

  • The Black Hawk College Foundation has many scholarships for students. These and many others can be found at the BHC scholarships page.
  • BHC Presidential Scholarship: In-district high school seniors in the top 10% of their graduating class at the end of seven semesters are eligible for the Black Hawk College Presidential Scholars Award.
  • Transfer scholarships are also available at many transfer institutions.
